The oldest written reference to the procession of the Holy Blood can be found in a charter of one of the Bruges' guilds dating 1291. It clearly states that the guilds of Bruges were obliged to take part in the procession. Most probably, the relic was already shown to the public in the chapel on the Burg Square. The veneration of the relic in the chapel may have been at the origin of the procession.
